Chapter 2: My Rebirth

I  believe that in order to understand where you’re going and why, you have to understand where you’ve been and what happened there.

Honestly, I cannot complain about upbringing. High School definitely had its highs and lows but, I am just glad those days are over. Realizing what I know now, I wish that I had the knowledge and the confidence I have now, back then (But doesn’t everyone).

I never really did anything bad growing up because I was afraid of my mother. If you know small communities; word gets around quickly, and coconut wireless was always a phone call away to my mother.

Anyways, like I said in my “about” page (mylahh.com), I tore my ACL at the end of my sophomore year of high school. At the time, I thought my life was ruined. I had been training both in soccer and volleyball my whole life, and all my dreams were taken from right under my feet.

When the doctor told me that the recovery process is 7-9 months, I was sick to my stomach because I knew my junior year was OVER. At least in sports.

My recovery was rough, and the healing didn’t go as planned for me. It was a mental thing and tbh I was mentally checked out (so much I didn’t take any photos of that time). I watched as all the things I wanted to happen to me, happened to others as I sat back, just grateful that I could walk without crutches. I decided to try-out for Varsity volleyball my senior year and I didn’t make the cut. I knew it was because I didn’t train enough, and I lost that competitive mindset. I was devastated but I decided to keep busy with other things.

One day, I had the thought “You know what? I can either let this happen to me, and it can continue to make me miserable or, I can use this to be a changing point in my life”.

I started to get involved in so many extracurriculars. All I can remember is that I was always so tired but I was determined to do it all… or at least try.

I got involved with Yearbook, May Night, Student Body Government and Church activities. I even tried other sports that didn’t put so much pressure on my knee as much like Air Riflery, Paddling, Golf and the swim team.

I found more time to go to the beach, surf, get my drivers license, dance, and just be open to trying new things. I also got a job and started working as a dancer at PCC’s Ali’i luau. I loved it! It was a great time.

Of course, there were its days when it sucked! But, I made new friends that were always down for an adventure.

But to understand why I am the way I am today, this story is absolutely essential!

After high school, I was excited to take this new found openness and willingness to try new things into college. Having this new outlook on life and trying to turn every “L” into motivation to be better, really helped me become the person I am today.
